You have decided on motorized shades. The next question is where the motor gets its power, and most people do not realise it is a question until the order is being written up. Battery, plug-in, solar or hardwired. Get it right and you never think about it again. Get it wrong and you spend the next ten years looking at a cord, or carrying a ladder into the great room twice a year.

The Short Version
  • Battery motors cover most of what goes into a finished house. No electrician, no wiring, no drywall repair, and the motor is already inside the roller tube when it arrives.
  • Hardwiring means low-voltage cable run to every opening and back to a central transformer. That is a framing stage job, so it belongs to new construction and full remodels.
  • A plug-in motor is the middle option people forget: a small transformer into a nearby outlet, with a visible cord unless there is an outlet close to the head of the window.
  • Recharging is a cable into the headrail for a few hours. Quoted intervals across the industry run from a few months to about a year, which tells you it depends on the shade rather than on the motor.
  • Wide shades, heavy blackout fabric and shades that move several times a day all drain a battery faster than a small light-filtering shade that moves once.
  • Reach decides more of these than the technology does. A battery shade twenty feet up a great room wall is a ladder job every time it needs charging.
  • Solar panels keep a charged battery topped up on windows that get real sun. They do not revive a flat one.
  • Voice and app control is a separate question. Both battery and hardwired motors usually need a hub on your wifi, so a battery shade can be just as connected.

The Four Ways a Shade Motor Gets Power

Every motorized shade runs on low voltage. The only thing that changes is how that low voltage reaches it.

Rechargeable battery. A lithium battery lives inside the roller tube, inside the headrail, or in a slim wand that clips to the side of the window. You plug a cable into it a couple of times a year. Nothing about the window or the wall changes.

Plug-in. A small transformer goes into a standard outlet and a thin cable runs up to the headrail. Constant power with no charging, and no wall work either. The catch is the cable, which is only invisible if there is an outlet right at the top of the window or a way to run it behind the trim.

Solar. A small panel mounts on the glass or in the reveal and trickle charges the battery from daylight. It is an add-on to a battery motor rather than a power source of its own.

Hardwired. Low-voltage cable is run inside the wall to each opening and home run back to a central transformer, which itself plugs into an ordinary outlet in a utility room or closet. Permanent power, nothing to charge, nothing on show.

Battery Covers Most of What We Install

There is a common worry that motorizing shades means rewiring the house. It does not. In a finished home, battery motors are the normal answer, and fitting a motorized shade takes about the same time as fitting a manual one because the motor is already in the tube.

That matters most in houses that are only a few years old. Nobody wants to cut into four-year-old drywall to save themselves a charging cable. Battery also keeps your options open. If you decide in three years that the media room wants blackout roller shades instead of what is there now, you have not committed a wire to a particular product.

The same logic applies to the safety side of the decision. Motorized and cordless products both remove the dangling cord, which is the reason we point families toward cordless and motorized window coverings in homes with kids and pets. Battery power is what makes that upgrade easy to retrofit.

What Recharging Actually Involves

Here is the part the brochures are vague about. You plug a cable into a port on the headrail, or you slide the battery wand off its clip and plug that in, and you leave it for a few hours. Some systems now use a standard USB-C cable, which means one less proprietary thing to lose.

How often depends on three things: how big and heavy the shade is, what the fabric weighs, and how many times a day it moves. A wide blackout roller in a media room asks a lot more of a motor than a small light-filtering shade in a powder room. Published intervals across the industry range from a few months to roughly a year, and that spread is the honest answer. Anyone quoting you one confident number for every window is guessing.

So the useful question is not how many months the battery lasts. It is how much trouble a charge is at that particular window. At a bedroom window you can reach from the floor, twice a year is nothing. Twenty feet up, it is a different conversation.

Where Hardwiring Earns Its Keep

Four situations make hardwiring worth the trouble.

Windows you cannot reach. This is the big one in North Texas. Two-story window walls, transoms above a stair landing, anything that needs scaffolding. We covered how these get handled in treating tall windows in a two-story great room, and power is the part of that decision people underestimate.

A lot of shades running on a schedule. Whole-house automation that closes the west side every afternoon puts real cycles on every motor. Multiply that by twenty windows and battery maintenance turns into a chore.

Very large or heavy shades. Big rollers, heavy blackout fabric and oversized panels need more torque, and more torque drains a battery faster. Hardwired and plug-in motors have far fewer size and weight limits.

You are building anyway. If the walls are open, running the cable is a small line item. Adding it later is not.

Pre-Wiring Happens Before the Drywall

If you are building, this is the one piece of timing that matters. The cable has to be pulled while the framing is open, so the conversation belongs at the plan stage, not at the paint stage.

What gets planned: a low-voltage cable stubbed out at the head of each window, usually to one side of the opening with enough tail left accessible to connect later, and every run brought back to one central location rather than daisy chained between windows. At that central spot you need room for a transformer and a standard 120 volt outlet for it. If any windows are getting a recessed shade pocket, the pocket has to be framed deep enough for the roller before the ceiling is closed.

Your electrician provides the outlet. Whoever installs the shades handles the low-voltage terminations at final measure. The order of operations only works if the two of them have spoken, which is why we like being in the loop early on a new build.

The Solar Option, and What It Can and Cannot Do

A solar panel is a reasonable middle path on a window that gets real sun. The panel sits on the glass or tucks into the reveal, and it feeds a slow trickle of charge into the battery so the interval between plug-ins stretches out, sometimes to the point where you stop thinking about it.

Two honest limits. A panel keeps a charged battery topped up; it will not bring a flat one back on its own. And it needs light to work with, so it does a lot on a west-facing window in a Texas summer and very little on a north-facing one behind a covered porch.

On a tall window you can barely reach, a solar panel plus a battery motor is often the best available answer once the drywall is up.

Power and Smart Home Control Are Separate Questions

People conflate these two constantly. Whether a shade can be run from your phone or your voice has nothing to do with whether it runs on a battery.

Almost every motor, battery or hardwired, listens for a radio signal from a handheld remote or a wall switch. That works out of the box with no network involved. To add app control, scheduling, or Alexa and Google Home, you add a hub. The hub sits on your wifi, translates between your network and the shades, and needs its own outlet somewhere central. Everything on the motorized shades and blinds side of what we do can be set up either way.

How I Would Decide at Your Windows

Stand in the room and ask whether you could comfortably reach the top of that window from a step ladder.

If yes, use battery. Almost always. It is simpler, it is cheaper to install, and it leaves you free to change your mind later.

If no, and the house is still framed, pre-wire. You will never get a better chance.

If no, and the house is finished, look at a plug-in motor first if there is an outlet you can reach discreetly, and a battery motor with a solar panel if there is not.
